PowderRange® 15-5 (15-5PH) is a martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel powder for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Closely related to 17-4 but with reduced delta-ferrite, it offers higher strength, toughness and cleaner transverse properties, with excellent corrosion resistance and reliable performance up to 600°F (316°C).
Like 17-4, it age-hardens in a single, low-temperature step, so you can tune the strength-to-toughness balance for functional production parts, rapid tooling and prototyping.
Why teams buy this powder from Additive Plus
- Genuine Carpenter PowderRange® 15-5 — gas-atomized for high sphericity, low oxygen and consistent flow.
- Available in small, workable volumes. Most mills sell large minimums and hide pricing behind an account. We stock this alloy and sell it in accessible quantities at a clear, published price.
- Full COA with every lot — particle size distribution, chemistry, apparent density and flow rate, with a traceable lot number.
- Fast dispatch from Los Angeles.
- Need a custom alloy or a tighter cut? We also run our own atomization in-house and can produce custom small-batch powder on request — separate from this stocked product.
Standards & equivalents
- Applicable specification: AMS 5659
- Equivalents / alternate names: 15-5PH · PH1 · UNS S15500 · 1.4545
- Machine type: F — LPBF · Particle size: 15–45 µm · Bottle: 10 kg / 22 lbs

- Quality: manufactured by Carpenter Additive under AS9100, AS9120, ISO 9001 & ISO 13485 quality systems. (These certifications are Carpenter’s, covering the powder; Additive Plus resells genuine, fully traceable lots and is not itself a certified manufacturer.)
Chemical composition
Typical chemistry (wt%), per the Carpenter PowderRange® datasheet:
| Element | Content | Element | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron (Fe) | Balance | Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00% |
| Chromium (Cr) | 14.00–15.50% | Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 3.50–5.50% | Molybdenum (Mo) | ≤ 0.50% |
| Copper (Cu) | 2.50–4.50% | Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.070% |
| Niobium (Nb) | 5×C–0.45% | Nitrogen (N) | ≤ 0.10% |
| Oxygen (O) | ≤ 0.030% | Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.030% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.015% |
Heat treatment & processing
- Age-hardenable in a single, low-temperature step — choose the aging condition (e.g. H900 and up) to dial in strength vs. toughness.
- Typical route: solution anneal, then age per the target condition.
- Good fabricating characteristics; reduced ferrite gives cleaner, more uniform mechanical properties than standard 17-4.
Key performance benefits
- Good strength, toughness, hardness and ductility
- Excellent response to precipitation (age) hardening
- Good corrosion resistance, stable up to 600°F (316°C)
- Cleaner transverse properties than standard 17-4 (lower ferrite)
- Well suited for functional parts, tooling and prototyping
Typical applications
- Surgical instruments and tools
- Valves and fittings
- Pumps and impellers
- Manifolds
- Industrial and chemical-processing equipment
